Unpack, power up, and connect to the network. Zero-touch configuration (ZTC) is a feature that offers users the convenience of automatic set up straight out of the box. This method of configuration is fast, reliable, and costs less to deploy, with fewer human errors. It is an alternative to configuring devices manually one at a time, instead providing the ability to configure and update tens, hundreds, or thousands of devices instantly. It’s more efficient for admins and less frustrating and intimidating for the user. Yet, when it comes to zero-touch configuration, many companies fall short of their promises.

ZTC is the process of provisioning endpoint devices automatically with minimal human intervention. Once the ZTC device enrolment begins, it automatically distributes provisioning information, enabling IT teams to configure and modify devices remotely, at scale, in an instant. The same goes for a pushing firmware and security updates. Once a configuration file is ready, it may be deployed to any number of devices with just a few clicks. Work that used to take hours to deploy can now be completed in minutes.

The goal of ZTC is to add convenience to deployment and management, as well as save time and effort by eliminating superfluous tasks. Many solutions live up to the promise of being “zero touch”, but only after extensive out-of-scope configuration has been performed, including bootstrapping VMs, activating licenses, and setting up supporting apps. More manual intervention increases the likelihood of possible misconfiguration. Problems can occur if deployments are not tested beforehand, leading to potential security flaws that compromise connected devices. It can also be an indication that there are other failed components along the pipeline.

Whether deploying to a single user or to a team of thousands, SDM Tech has integrated a ZTC system that works seamlessly with our hardened Android OS, enhancing security and privacy out-of-the-box. When paired with over-the-air updates that are signed using the original equipment manufacturers keys, the integrity of endpoint devices can be secured beyond what other ZTC tools are able to offer.

It ensures a friction-free set up experience and disruption-free software and security update process throughout the life of a device. This gives users the reliability they require while maintaining productivity, ensuring security, and preserving patience.
